General Questions

The basics about CJJF and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art and self-defense system that focuses on controlling an opponent on the ground using leverage, positioning, and submissions rather than strikes. Because it relies on technique over size and strength, it is one of the most effective and practical martial arts for people of all body types.

What makes CJJF North Carolina different?

We are a veteran-owned, family-focused academy and the first CJJF (Caveirinha Jiu-Jitsu Family) school on the East Coast, with a direct lineage from Carlos Gracie Jr. through Professor Aldo “Caveirinha” Januario. We pride ourselves on a safe, welcoming environment for all ages and levels, and we train members of the public alongside police, first responders, and Elon University students.

Where are you located and which areas do you serve?

We are at 625 N Park Ave, Burlington, NC 27217 — about a 10-15 minute drive from Graham, Mebane, Gibsonville, and Elon, so students from across Alamance County train with us.

Do I have to compete?

Not at all. Many of our students train purely for fitness, self-defense, and fun, and never compete. For those who want to test themselves, we offer guidance and support for local tournaments — but it is always your choice.

Is jiu-jitsu a good workout?

Yes. A typical class combines warm-ups, technique drilling, and live training that builds strength, cardio, flexibility, and coordination. Most students find it far more engaging than a traditional gym workout.

For Adults

Common questions from adult students (ages 13+).

I am out of shape / not athletic — can I still start?

Absolutely. You do not need to be fit to begin — you get in shape by training. Classes are scalable, you go at your own pace, and our coaches help you train smart. Most adults are surprised how quickly their conditioning improves.

I am in my 30s, 40s, or older. Am I too old to start?

No. We have adult students across a wide range of ages. Jiu-jitsu is a lifelong art, and training can be adjusted to your body and goals. Plenty of people start in their 40s and 50s and thrive.

Is BJJ effective for real self-defense?

Yes. BJJ is widely regarded as one of the most effective self-defense systems because most physical confrontations end up in close range or on the ground, where control and leverage matter more than size or striking.

Will I get hurt?

Jiu-jitsu is a contact sport, so occasional soreness is normal, but we prioritize safety. Beginners drill controlled techniques, live training is supervised, and tapping (signaling to stop) keeps everyone safe. Training smart and communicating with partners greatly reduces injury risk.

How often should I train?

Two to three classes per week is a great starting point for steady progress while letting your body recover. You are welcome to attend more as you build conditioning and confidence.

For Kids & Parents

What parents most want to know about our youth program.

What age can my child start?

Children can begin as early as age 6. We have dedicated groups for ages 6-8 and 9-12, with teens able to move into our adult classes as they grow.

Is jiu-jitsu safe for children?

Yes. Our kids classes run in a supervised, structured environment that emphasizes control, respect, and technique over roughness. Safety and good behavior are part of every class.

How does jiu-jitsu help with bullying?

BJJ builds the confidence and calm that often stop bullying before it starts, and it teaches real, control-based skills to safely manage a physical situation without striking. Just as importantly, it teaches discipline and self-control about when not to use those skills.

My child is shy or has a lot of energy — is this a good fit?

It is a great fit for both. Jiu-jitsu helps shy kids build confidence and gives high-energy kids a positive, structured outlet. Coaches tailor encouragement to each child.

Can my child try a class before signing up?

Yes. Bring your child in for a trial so they can experience a class and you can meet the coaches before deciding.

Do parents stay and watch?

Yes, parents are welcome to watch classes from our viewing area. Many families love seeing their kids progress week to week.

For Beginners & New Students

New to martial arts or new to our gym? Start here.

I have never done any martial art. Where do I start?

Start With a Trial. Your first classes introduce the most important fundamentals at a beginner-friendly pace, and you will always have coaches and training partners helping you learn. Everyone was new once.

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable athletic clothing without zippers, buttons, or pockets — shorts and a t-shirt or rash guard work well. Bring a water bottle. Once you decide to continue, we will guide you on getting a gi (the traditional uniform).

What is a gi, and do I need one right away?

A gi is the traditional jiu-jitsu uniform. You do not need one for your trial — just wear athletic clothes. We will help you choose a gi once you join.

What actually happens in a typical class?

Most classes start with a warm-up, move into instructor-led technique drilling, and finish with optional live training (“rolling”) where you apply what you learned with a partner. Beginners are eased into live training gradually.

What does “tapping” mean?

Tapping — a tap on your partner or the mat — is how you safely signal to stop when caught in a submission or when you are uncomfortable. It is a normal, essential part of training and keeps everyone safe. Tapping is learning, not losing.

Do I need to be in shape before I join?

No. You build the right kind of fitness by training. Come as you are and progress at your own pace.

How long does it take to get good?

Everyone progresses differently, but with consistent training most people feel noticeably more capable within a few months. BJJ rewards steady, long-term practice — and the journey is the fun part.
